Munich, September 7, 2016 | Munich-based robotics startup Magazino has won another customer for its TORU Cube order picking robot in the form of logistics service provider Fiege. Three of the mobile robots for piece-precise handling will be used from September in the Fiege Mega Center Ibbenbüren, where they will pick shoes ordered online. With its laser and camera system, the perception-controlled and networked robot can autonomously locate individual objects on shelves, identify them and then grasp them with pin-point accuracy and transport them to their destination.
Jens Fiege, CEO of the family business, is looking forward to the joint project with Magazino. “With the use of new technologies, we are always pursuing the goal of making our logistical processes faster and more efficient. Magazino’s robots are an exciting project for the further digitization of our warehouses. I think we will use our practical experience to contribute to further developing and refining robotics in intralogistics,” says Jens Fiege.
Frederik Brantner, co-founder and commercial director at Magazino, emphasizes: “Right from the start, it was important that the robots could work parallel to humans. This means that part of the picking process can be automated flexibly and step by step.”
The TORU Cube robot receives its picking orders via WLAN and can pick rectangular objects weighing up to three kilograms — both from the bottom and top shelves of standard shelving systems. In its internal storage space, TORU Cube can temporarily store six to eight picked shoe cartons and thus process several orders in one run. Thanks to safety lasers, the robot detects obstacles in the path as well as employees in its vicinity — at the same time, TORU Cube can orient itself in the warehouse.
This eliminates the need for reflectors or marking lines on the hall floor. Once it has been trained, the networked robot can also use its WLAN connection to share maps of its own environment, as well as experiences with specific objects or challenges with new robot colleagues.
